I was gazing out the window and in Brazil there were a lot of favelas (slums or shantytowns).
Out the window, I saw sprawling miles of these shanty towns. People living in such poverty compared to what most of the Western world is used to.
Apparently there are about 6.5 million people who live in the favelas in Brazil. Not only is finding food daily probably a mission, but keeping safe from the violence of the guns and drug wars is a common concern.
So on the roof of one of these dwellings, I saw 4 kids. They were looking at something in the sky, and even from the bus, I saw that they had smiles on their faces. What were they watching? I followed their gaze and noticed some kites flying in the sky. Big, bright, colourful kites swaying in the wind high above.
I could literally feel the joy emanating from these kids on the wobbly rooftop, deriving such joy from such a simple thing as watching kites fly.
I knew that all people everywhere, despite their circumstances, look for happiness. The old adage, "Seek and ye shall find," is so true. These kids reminded me that happiness always exists. It's just by appreciating what we do have, the good things in life, and by focussing on that, we naturally begin to experience more and more happiness, more contentment and more peace.
Such a simple shift from seeing the glass as half full as opposed to half empty. Happiness is around every corner, in every breath, and happiness is life itself. Just have to remember to choose wisely what we put our attention on, and seek that which will fulfil us.
Have a happy day!
